Your first purchases should be small and multifunctional. A great starter item is a resistance band or even a few resistance bands of varying elasticities. For someone just starting out, it is a great way to begin toning your muscles and getting used to exercising. With a door attachment, there are even more workouts you can perform.
Eventually, you are going to want to get something that will work your muscles a bit harder. Dumbbells are the perfect item, but can take up a lot of space getting dumbbells of different weights. A popular alternative is the adjustable dumbbell. They are still just as compact, but allow you to change the weight used between repetitions. Depending on the kind of adjustable dumbbells you get, the switch between weights can be manual which takes a bit of time or automatic which takes about a second.
There are certain dumbbell exercises that are best performed seated, but many people will simply use any chair they have around their home. This can lead to injury because these chairs may not be made for that much weight and don’t give you the support that your back needs.
